Julian Sands: Who is the British Hollywood actor missing in California?
Phone records of missing actor Julian Sands have revealed his last known movements, as his family clings to hope a week after his disappearance.
Police revealed on Friday that the British actor, best known for films such as A room with a view and arachnophobia, was on the move two days after being reported missing in the California mountains.
Phone pings attempted since have failed, police said, likely due to the actor’s phone running out of battery.
It comes after The Independent revealed footage sent from Sands to his grandson Billy in September, which shows the father-of-three mountaineering.
Sands has been missing in the Mount Baldy area since Jan. 13, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said. It was thought to be somewhere on the popular Baldy Bowl Trail, which climbs 3,900 feet in 4.5 miles to the highest peak of the San Gabriel Mountains.
Search and rescue teams searching for Sands were initially forced to suspend the search over the weekend due to an avalanche threat. Snow and fog continued to hamper searches these days.
The Independent understands that Sands’ son Henry has joined the search. He retraces the route taken by his father, with the help of an experienced climber.
Police update: Sands was reportedly still on the move on Sunday
Sands appeared to be on the move two full days after her first disappearance.
A spokesperson for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said, “On January 15, 2023, phone calls showed Sands heading to the Mount Baldy area.
“Additional phone pings from cell phone provider were attempted but failed, due to lack of cell service and most likely cell phone power outage.”

• Heed all posted warning signs

• Make sure you have the right equipment, train and be well prepared for alpine conditions (crampons, ice axe, appropriate clothing)
• Bring a tracking or GPS device such as a SPOT device or an INREACH device
• Make sure your cell phone is fully charged and bring an extra charged power bank for it
• Let someone know where and when you’re leaving, and what time you’ll be back
• Most important – If you don’t know, don’t go!
